Art. Armor. Attitude: Yoko Ono & The Porsche Carrera 5620
A frame that didn’t ask for permission.
When most people think of Yoko Ono, they think of John Lennon—his lyrics, his legacy, his signature wire-rimmed round glasses. But Yoko? She was sharper.
Yoko in shades—sharp, sculptural, and uncompromising.
Long before oversized sunglasses became a celebrity staple, Yoko Ono was already redefining eyewear. Her go-to choice was the Porsche Design Carrera 5620 sunglasses—a pair that, like her, far from ordinary.
Originally engineered in Germany and released in the early 1980s, the Porsche Carrera 5620 was designed for high performance. With its futuristic, visor-like silhouette, minimal metal bridge, and interchangeable lenses, it was made for Formula 1 drivers and aviation engineers—not the fashion elite. But Yoko turned them into a statement piece. She alchemized their original purpose built for protection in speed and power into artistry, and rebellion.
Art. Armor. Attitude!
In a world that tried to box her in, and an era that often asked women to soften, she sharpened instead. She wore the 5620 to add power to her presence, to protect her gaze, and to reclaim authorship over how she was seen.
Born in Tokyo and shaped in New York, Yoko Ono embodied vision. Her signature Porsche Design sunglasses—engineered in Germany blended modernist minimalism with cultural depth. And in her hands, they forecasted an entire era of avant-garde style. She famously wore them on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine in 1981 and again in 2013 for Interview magazine, solidifying the frames' status as a symb
ol of artistic expression.
Today, Creative director and photographer Coral recently featured our Yoko Ono frames in a shoot titled Nostalgia Meets Liberation. Her caption captured it best: “That quiet power you feel when the right piece unlocks something in you—confidence without trying, timeless without asking.” Coral and her team did an amazing job at capturing the essence of a frame that doesn’t follow trends but defines moments. In Coral’s hands, it became exactly what it always was: iconic, intentional, and unapologetically bold.
