Jean-Paul Gaultier was at the avant-garde of eyewear design in the 1980s. Although Japan was by far the most expensive place of production for eyewear frames at that time, Gaultier did not want to settle with anything less than the best craftsmanship for his sunglasses and had his designs produced by the best of the best: MURAI Japan. Unlike most other designers, he did not just license his brand to a big eyewear manufacturer but instead kept a minute supervision of the design and production of his sunglasses until 1999, when he left MURAI and started to produce in Italy.
