The American Optical Skymaster Navigator reflects the clean, precise character of mid-century eyewear design. Its softly squared aviator silhouette features a broad brow, gently rounded lower corners, and balanced proportions, creating a distinctive profile with a refined architectural quality. The slim gold-toned metal construction keeps the frame visually light, while the darker accents around the bridge and temple areas add subtle contrast.

Historical Context

Founded in Massachusetts in 1833, American Optical is one of the oldest eyewear manufacturers in the United States. The company became an important force in American optical manufacturing, introducing early steel spectacles, rimless frames, and the influential Ful-Vue construction. Its history is particularly tied to aviation and the U.S. military: American Optical supplied pilot goggles during World War I and developed military aviator sunglasses beginning in the 1930s.

American Optical's FG-58, introduced for U.S. military pilots in 1958 and now known as the Original Pilot, became one of its most recognizable designs. The model was later issued to NASA astronauts, and pairs accompanied the Apollo 11 crew to the moon in 1969. Beyond military eyewear, AO also crossed into fashion through collaborations with designers including Claire McCardell, Elsa Schiaparelli, and Oscar de la Renta, making vintage American Optical frames an intersection of American manufacturing, military design, and 20th-century fashion history.

I was blessed to have had these glasses fall onto my face right when I needed them. They fit perfectly and my eyes are so happy behind them. I hope to buy another pair of AZYR glasses soon. Sincerely Catherine

These are so sick! they remind me of my fav Macbeth Tom Delonge frames from 15+ years ago - the pink is so light it doesnt too girly. I have shoulder length hair and the red/brown pop love the shape and def will be getting some more soon

They arrived safe! The package got routed weirdly through USPS (NYC>AZ>Ohio>Georgia>San Diego) so the box was banged up, but the glasses were totally fine! Everything was as pictured, fit me and look great! Thank you so much to Maureen and her team for getting me something I've dreamed of for years :)

Awesome glasses, titanium frame is super light and sturdy, the design is very unique and cool without being too outlandish. They also came with a really cool triangular prism folding carrying case.

"Transmission" 1990s Blinde Sunglasses

Very happy with the glasses- sweet people packed my order with a handwritten note. Haven't worn them out much but they fit and they're comfortable, they actually look right, not tacky. Fits my smallerish face without looking too big. Thanks!

"Trinity" 1990s Matrix Sunglasses

The Matrix glasses are incredible and fit perfectly. The virtual try on feature is a game changer and helped me make the right choice based on my face shape without any guesswork. The personal touch throughout the whole experience was great, I highly highly recommend!

Customer photo review of "Blunt" 1960s

Love the glasses, been wearing em all year and theyve treated me well!

"Blunt" 1960s

The glasses are good, but the description says it'll fit "medium to wide faces" ... these are small sunglasses. I wouldn't say they're even close to "medium" or above.
